Ma'alaea Bay |
Yesterday I had another stellar Maui day, well, aside from the nasty, voggy, muggy, still sweaty weather. My most excellent trainer, Tree Baca, and I took the Pali trail from the Kihei turnoff to the beach on the Lahaina side. We jogged a bit, a very little bit, but hiked hard and fast in the oppresive heat. Although we couldn't see Haleakala due to volcano haze the views of Ma'alaea and the sea were beautiful.

It's been years since I've seen the West Maui Mountains so green. There were wild flowers popping up everywhere. The recent rains made it a bit muddy in places. Our shoes picked up extra poundage as we tromped through.
We saw some whales frolicking in the distance, too far for photos but close enough to give us a thrill.
Later that afternoon I hopped on Ali'i Nui with my buddy Ann for a real whale watch and were continuously entertained for 2 hours while babies and mammas breached and tail slapped. A couple of ice cold beers hit the spot after the early morning hike in the heat.
