Local, Organic, Sustainable, YUM! (eating at Fish)

A few weeks ago I had just finished an invigorating run along the Marin Headlands. The weather was clear, a crisp 50 degrees. The Golden Gate Bridge towered majestically over a silver blue bay that was speckled with container barges, tugs and sailboats. My stomach was growling and all I could think of were plump juicy barbecued oysters. Thank goodness for technology. I pulled out my phone, which had just recorded my run, and Googled barbecued oysters in Marin County. The first item on the list was Fish in Sausalito. Perfect! It was right on my way home. I followed Siri’s directions to a marina off of Bridgeway and found a bright, bustling cafĂ© with plenty of seating inside and out and a stunning view of the Sausalito Yacht Harbor.
I perused the menu as I joined the queue to place my order at the counter. A blackboard on the wall listed the specials of the day as well as the oyster offerings. I ordered 6 barbecued oysters and a glass of sparkling rose and took a seat at the bar so I could watch the cooks. One of the staff let me know that in the future I didn’t have to wait in line if I sat at the bar, I could order from there. It was sunny and many people sat outside but I was damp from my run and it was still quite chilly for this Maui girl.
The service was prompt and friendly, the atmosphere casual and lively. My oysters were cooked to fat, juicy perfection served with just a dollop of sauce and a wedge of lemon. The sauce was more cocktail than barbecue but it was tasty none-the-less. The sparkling rose was a healthy pour in a small mason jar and was a perfect dry complement to the briny oysters.

I have since eaten at Fish again, sharing a combo fish/oysters and chips with my brother. He ordered clam chowder that was not too thick and corn starchy like so many are. It was loaded with clams and tasted super fresh. I ordered a side of crisp coleslaw that was thankfully not goopy with mayonnaise. The shared meal was large enough that we brought home left over’s and the girl at the counter remembered me from my just one previous visit. How great is that?!

Besides the excellent service and food I love this place because of their philosophy. They are local and organic as much as possible and totally sustainable. I don’t have to think when I eat there; I just know it’s all good.  I can’t wait for the summer months to sit outside slurping raw oysters and gulping one of their eight beers on tap.
