Ready for race day

The Maui Marathon web site said nothing about when or where to pick up your race packet. I had assumed, not having done many races before, that I would just show up early and pick it up on race day. Good thing that didn’t quite feel right to me. I emailed the race director and found out that I had to pick up the packet today at the Westin. That’s 2 trips to the West side in two days. I don’t think I’ve made two trips over there in the last 2 years! Kaanapali is only 35 miles away but when you live on the North Shore of Maui it seems a world away.
Now, the adrenalin has started. Just being at the race site was energizing and exciting. Roads are blocked around the start line and people are rushing about setting up tents and tables. I remember the feeling at the beginning of the canoe races, waiting for the gun. Your heart pounds and concentration narrows. The paddle is up and the only thing you wait for is the sound of that crack, the distinct pop of the start gun. Yeehaw, I’m excited about tomorrow. Hopefully my ankle will hold up. It’s been a little touch and go the last couple days. But Dr. Drew my chiropractor works magic. I’m adjusted and taped and ready to get up at 3 a.m. for the long haul to the opposite side of this hunk of land in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.
