On Suttree by Cormack McCarthy

Another of McCarthy’s books under my belt. I love this guy, as onerous as I find him at times and as depressing as this book was I wanted to start it again as soon as I finished it. I’d often just savor the music of the words and the rhythm rather than try to divine their meaning. More words than I could have imagined not knowing. My vocabulary is good. Occasionally while reading a book I’ll find a word that I can’t exactly define but I can usually at least glean it’s meaning from the context. In Suttree there were a myriad of words I had never seen or heard, words whose roots were not discernible so there was no room for conjecture. A fascinating and challenging read, totally captivating while being difficult and dreary of setting and tone. I just downloaded “Blood Meridian” but I think I’ll read something light before diving into McCarthy’s world again.

And so from McCarthy to Handler. What a shift in perception. I laughed out loud on every other page. A highly enjoyable 2 day read filled with absurd and raunchy stories. A great way to lift my spirits after the depths of a southern Suttree.
